Here are nine essential steps to help prevent you from becoming a victim of identity theft.

Step #1: Don't reveal your Social Security number or other personal information unless absolutely necessary. Ask to use another form of identification. Find out how such data will be used and if it will be kept confidential.

Step #2: Never have your social security number printed on checks.

Step #3: Carry the minimum number of credit cards and identification.

Step #4: Photocopy both sides of everything carried in your wallet and/or purse. Keep this page in a safe place.

Step #5: If your wallet is stolen or lost, cancel all credit cards and request new accounts.

Step #6: Cancel banking and savings accounts if a check is stolen or missing. Put a stop on all outstanding checks.

Step #7: Notify the Department of Motor Vehicles if your driver's license is lost.

Step #8: Thoroughly destroy receipts, old checks, and other sensitive financial documents that are no longer needed.

Step #9: Review your credit report and check it for accuracy at least once each year.
